Private events in Paris
A dinner for thirty, a birthday for eighty, a private visit before the doors open. What is genuinely possible in Paris, and the rules that decide whether the evening goes well. Every fact is dated and linked to its source; every evening we arrange is made to measure.
Where can you hold a private event in Paris?
Three kinds of places: a monument or museum hired for the evening; a private residence, which suits an invitation-only dinner but comes with rules on noise, co-ownership and safety; and the private rooms of hotels and restaurants, the simplest option. The right choice depends on guest numbers, music and how late you finish.
Which monuments can be hired?
In Paris, the Centre des monuments nationaux hires out the Arc de Triomphe for private visits before opening or after closing, the Conciergerie for dinners and receptions, and the Hôtel de la Marine, on place de la Concorde, for evenings in its salons and state rooms (Centre des monuments nationaux, consulted on 20 September 2026).
Two things to know. Hiring a monument covers the place, not the evening: the caterer, the flowers, the lighting, the music and the staff come on top, and monuments often work with a list of approved caterers. And not every institution deals with private individuals: the Louvre states that its spaces can be hired "by companies", for private visits followed by a cocktail or a gala dinner (Louvre, official help page). The Palais Garnier hires out its Grand Foyer for gala dinners of up to 700 guests and its public areas for up to 2,000 at a cocktail (Opéra national de Paris).
What this means in practice: "after-hours access" exists, it is official, and it is booked with the institution itself, months ahead. Be wary of anyone who promises it without naming the institution's own events office.
Can you hold a dinner or a party in a private apartment?
Yes, if it is a genuinely private event: guests invited by name, nothing sold, in a home whose owner and building rules allow it. A dinner for twenty or thirty raises no formality. A party with amplified music for eighty is a different matter: noise is punishable at any hour, and a residence that is hired out for events is no longer a simple home in the eyes of the law.
Noise
There is no "allowed until 10 pm" rule in France. Noise that disturbs the neighbours by its length, repetition or intensity is an offence by day as well as by night; between 10 pm and 7 am it is the well-known tapage nocturne. The fixed fine is €68, €180 if paid late, up to €450, and the equipment can be confiscated (service-public.gouv.fr; Penal Code, art. R623-2). In a Haussmann building, floors carry sound: a seated dinner is fine, a dance floor is not.
The building and the owner
Most Paris apartments are in co-ownership. The building's rules can forbid commercial use and repeated receptions, and the common areas are never part of the party. If the apartment is rented, the lease decides: serviced apartments and short-term rentals almost always forbid parties and events. Holding a reception in a rented residence requires the owner's written consent, and it is the first thing we check.
When a residence becomes a venue
French building law defines an establishment open to the public as any premises where people are admitted freely or for payment, or where meetings are held "open to all comers or by invitation, paid or not" (Construction and Housing Code, art. R143-2). A family home hosting its owner's guests is not that. A mansion regularly let for a fee to host receptions is likely to be, and must then meet fire-safety rules and a declared capacity. If you hire a private mansion, ask for its safety classification and its authorised capacity in writing.
Alcohol, music, security
- Alcohol offered to invited guests at a private event requires no licence. Selling it, or charging an entry price that covers it, does. A professional caterer works under its own authorisations: confirm this with them.
- Music. Outside the family circle, playing protected music at an event, by a DJ, a band or a playlist, requires an authorisation from Sacem, requested before the event. Professional organisers handle it.
- Security. Anyone paid to guard an entrance, watch a site or protect a person must work for a company authorised by the national regulator, the CNAPS, and hold a professional card for that activity (Internal Security Code, art. L611-1 and L612-9). "A friend who does security" is not an option in France. Ask for the authorisation number.

What to settle before you send invitations
- Written consent of the owner, and of the building if its rules require it.
- The authorised capacity of the place, seated and standing.
- The end time, the music, and how guests leave without gathering in the street.
- Who holds which contract: venue, caterer, security, musicians, each with its own insurance.
- Deliveries and set-up: lift, stairs, access hours, protection of floors and walls.
- A deposit for damage and a named person on site with authority to decide.
- For public figures: arrival by car, a private entrance, a no-photography rule agreed with suppliers.

Short answers
Can you hire the Louvre for a private dinner?
The Louvre states that its spaces can be hired by companies, for private visits that may be followed by a cocktail or a gala dinner, through its events office. It does not present this offer to private individuals. Several national monuments, such as the Conciergerie, the Arc de Triomphe and the Hôtel de la Marine, publish hire prices open to any organiser.
Is a private visit of the Arc de Triomphe possible?
Yes. The Centre des monuments nationaux offers private visits from 8 am to 10 am, before public opening, for groups of up to 30 people, and late-evening visits with a glass of champagne for groups of up to 20. We arrange them on request.
Can I hold a party in a rented luxury apartment in Paris?
Only with the owner's written consent. Most serviced and short-term rental contracts forbid parties and events, co-ownership rules can forbid receptions, and noise that disturbs neighbours is an offence at any hour. A seated dinner for invited guests is usually acceptable; amplified music is not.
Do I need a licence to serve alcohol at a private event in France?
Not when the drinks are offered to invited guests and nothing is sold. A licence is needed when alcohol is sold, including through an entry price. Caterers work under their own authorisations.
